International News: Two years have passed since the Gaza War. Hamas launched Operation Al-Aqsa (Flood) against Israel on October 7, 2023. Hopes are now growing that a deal could be reached on the release of Israeli hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza. Indirect discussions between Hamas and Israel have begun in Egypt, but Israeli attacks on Gaza continue.
Israeli ammunition is blazing in Gaza. With Israel's increasing control in Gaza, there is growing hope around the world that a ceasefire may soon be implemented. This is due to discussions that began between Hamas and Israel in Cairo, Egypt, on October 6th. Israeli and Hamas delegations arrived in Cairo on October 6th.
Indirect discussions began between Hamas and Israel. Discussions covered a number of issues, including the release of Israeli hostages. The first round of meetings ended on a positive note. Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, members of the US delegation, also participated in the discussions. Witkoff stated that both sides agreed that a ceasefire should now be held.
The US President has said that the prospect of reaching an agreement that has not been reached in decades has now increased. US President Donald Trump stated that things are moving in the right direction. Hamas is agreeing on many important issues. The Israeli government is also facing two types of internal pressure.
The families of the hostages want the war to be halted to secure the release of their loved ones. Trump also wants Israel to declare a ceasefire quickly. Israel's extreme nationalists, however, want the Israeli army to remain in place until Hamas is destroyed. The first round of discussions on Trump's peace proposal has already taken place in Cairo. This is considered a positive step, but it is unlikely that Hamas will release the hostages without a ceasefire guarantee.
The challenge for Trump will be how to convince Israel to agree to a ceasefire and Hamas to release the hostages. The fear is that if Hamas releases all the hostages, Israel could renew the war, leaving Hamas without any tools to exert pressure.
Even while the hostage release was being discussed in Cairo, Israel's attacks on Gaza continued. Trump had already stated on October 4th that Israel should cease its attacks on Gaza. However, on October 6th and 7th, Israel bombed several areas of Gaza, razing residential buildings to the ground.
