Trump-Putin Meeting: Is It Happening in Russia or Alaska? (Social media)
International News: During a press conference in Washington, D.C., on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump unexpectedly caused confusion when he said he would be “going to Russia” this Friday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The statement surprised reporters, as the official meeting is actually scheduled to take place in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025.
The press conference was primarily focused on rising crime rates in the capital, where Trump also announced plans to deploy the National Guard and take control of the city’s police operations. But it was his remark about the location of the summit that grabbed headlines.
“I'm gonna see Putin. I'm going to Russia on Friday,” U.S. President Donald Trump said at a press conference Monday, in what appeared to be a misstatement.

The upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin is being organized to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022 following Russia’s invasion. Trump has repeatedly claimed the conflict would never have started if he had been president at the time. Speaking about the talks, he said, “This is Joe Biden’s war, not mine. I’m going to tell Putin he has to end it. He wouldn’t have challenged me.”
Trump also praised Putin for agreeing to come to the United States rather than hosting the talks in Russia or at a neutral location. He expressed hope that the meeting could lead to a future sit-down involving both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, possibly with Trump acting as a mediator.
This is not the first time Trump’s off-the-cuff comments have drawn attention. Just last week, during a rally in Ohio, he mistakenly claimed that Hungary shares a border with Russia—a geographical inaccuracy quickly corrected by experts. Earlier in the year, he wrongly said NATO was created after World War II to stop China, another statement widely shared on social media for its inaccuracy.
To avoid further confusion, Trump had already shared the correct summit details on his Truth Social platform. He wrote, “The highly anticipated meeting between myself and President Vladimir Putin will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska.”
The choice of Alaska holds historical significance, as the United States purchased it from Russia in 1867. Geographically, it lies close to Russian territory, making travel easier for the Russian delegation. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov described the location as “logical” given the two countries’ proximity.
Anchorage previously hosted a major diplomatic event in March 2021, when U.S. and Chinese officials met there. That meeting became tense after both sides exchanged accusations, but it highlighted Alaska’s potential as a neutral ground for important discussions.
The world will be closely watching the Alaska summit to see whether Trump can persuade Putin to take steps toward ending the war. However, political analysts caution that Trump’s frequent unscripted remarks could overshadow the main purpose of the meeting and complicate delicate negotiations.
