World News: US President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, issued a bold statement that once again sent ripples through the global trade landscape. He revealed plans to impose heavy import duties on key products such as copper, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors. Additionally, he hinted at a 10% additional tariff on BRICS countries, raising concerns in nations like India that are part of the bloc.

Medicines Could Face Up to 200% Import Tax

Speaking to the press after a meeting at the White House, Trump warned that imported medicines could be taxed as high as 200%. According to him, foreign pharmaceutical companies have too much control over the American market, and such high tariffs would encourage domestic drug manufacturing.

He added that international companies would be given a transition period of 1 to 1.5 years to adjust their supply chains accordingly.

50% Tariff on Copper in the Pipeline

Trump also announced his intent to impose a 50% tariff on imported copper. Copper is a strategically vital metal in the US, widely used in electric vehicles, defense systems, power grids, and electronics. The goal of this tariff is to strengthen domestic copper production and reduce reliance on imports.

Although Trump did not specify when this tariff would be implemented, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick later stated that the policy could come into effect by the end of July or on August 1.

Nations Most Likely to be Affected

According to US trade statistics, the country imports around 50% of its copper demand, with Chile, Canada, and Mexico being the top suppliers. If the proposed tariff is enacted, it would directly impact these economies, particularly Chile, which could suffer significant losses due to its dependency on US exports.

BRICS Nations Also Face New Trade Pressure

Trump didn’t stop at product tariffs. He also announced his intention to levy a 10% additional import tariff on all BRICS countries. In his words, “BRICS was founded with the aim of weakening the US economically. Hence, no country involved will be given any exemption.”

The BRICS alliance, which includes India, Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa, now faces the threat of further trade restrictions. For countries like India, this could pose a dual challenge—both in terms of disrupted global trade and potential strain on diplomatic relations with the US.

What Does This Mean for Global Trade?

Trump’s recent comments strongly suggest that, if he returns to power, US trade policy will take a more protectionist and nationalist turn. He appears determined to use tariffs as economic weapons against any country or group perceived as undermining American dominance—whether that’s BRICS or even longstanding allies.
