Washington: US President Donald Trump has said that if India does not support the US on the "Russian oil issue," tariffs imposed on Indian goods may be further increased. This statement of Trump came to light on Monday.
Trump was talking about the ongoing oil trade between India and Russia, which his administration has long opposed. Based on this issue, the tariff on products coming from India was increased to 50 percent in August 2025.
In his statement, Trump also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said Modi was a “good person” and was aware that the US president was angry over the issue. Trump also said that America can increase tariffs very soon if it wants.
Trump said these things when he was giving information on America's future strategy after the arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Oil emerged as an important reason in this entire incident.
This warning has come at a time when talks are going on between India and America regarding trade. This stance of Trump may once again increase tension in the relations between the two countries.
In October, Trump had claimed that Prime Minister Modi had assured him that India would stop buying Russian oil. However, the Indian government had clearly stated that no such talks took place.
India says that its energy policy is based on the needs of the country and the options available in the market. The government has repeatedly said that it takes decisions keeping in mind the interests of its consumers.
American officials allege that Russia is using the money received from oil sold to India in the Ukraine war. He also says that India is earning profit by reselling this oil.
However, even after the tariff increase, Trump had earlier said that he wanted to maintain friendship with Prime Minister Modi and that the two countries have a "special relationship." Modi had also described relations with America as positive at that time.
It is clear from Trump's latest statement that the issue of Russian oil can remain a big test for India-US relations in the coming days.
