Trump's Marine One In Mid-Air Safety Scare After Flying Too Close To Passenger Plane (X)
Washington: The Marine One helicopter carrying the US President Donald Trump was dangerously near a passenger aircraft in Washington on Tuesday. This accident happened around the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. This has put doubts on the air traffic control system. Investigations are now underway by the FAA and NTSB, following the accident, which happened after a failed radio communication.
This event occurred at about 2:33 pm on Tuesday. The helicopter that had Trump aboard left Ellipse area near the White House and headed towards Joint Base Andrews. Shortly thereafter, the airliner left Reagan National Airport.
Not much after the airliner had left, the helicopter also headed towards the airport. The two aircraft came close enough to one another.

As per FAA guidelines, the two aircraft flying in this region should keep a minimum straight-line distance of 1.5 miles apart from each other, as well as 500 feet in terms of altitude. According to the initial findings, it was found that both aircraft were not on a collision course and were following the minimum distance. There was also no immediate risk to President Trump or the passengers on board. Both aircraft landed safely at their respective destinations.
As per reports, the pilot crew of Marine One tried to convey the message to the air traffic control about three minutes before the take-off. However, due to some radio communication problem, the message was not conveyed to the air traffic control clearly, and hence air traffic control gave clearance to the passenger aircraft to take off. Hence, there was not enough safety distance maintained between the two aircraft.
This incident is considered important because a military helicopter and a passenger passenger plane crashed in January 2025 near Reagan National Airport, resulting in 67 deaths. The incident with Trump's helicopter and a passenger plane creates concerns about safety in the busy airspace of the capital.
