Zelenskyy Confirms U.S. Military Aid Uninterrupted Amid Trump Administration's Aid Pause (X/ @trumprealparody)
World News: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Saturday that military aid from the United States has not been halted, despite reports indicating a pause in foreign aid by the Trump administration for a period of 90 days. Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am focused on military aid; it has not been stopped, thank God," during a press conference alongside Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of U.S. military assistance, which constitutes approximately 40% of Ukraine's military needs. However, he did not clarify whether humanitarian aid has also been affected as Ukraine continues to combat Russian aggression that began in January 2022.
The newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the temporary suspension of foreign aid grants for 90 days, with exceptions made for Israel and Egypt. In an internal memo, Rubio stated, "No new funds shall be obligated for new awards or extensions of existing awards until each proposed new award or extension has been reviewed and approved," as reported by AFP.
The future of U.S. aid to Ukraine hangs in the balance as Donald Trump embarks on his second term as president. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he would have prevented Russia's invasion had he been in office, although he was president during earlier conflicts between Ukrainian forces and Moscow-aligned separatists prior to the large-scale invasion in 2022. Recently, Trump suggested that Zelenskyy should have negotiated with Putin to avert the ongoing conflict and threatened to impose heavy tariffs and sanctions on Russia if a resolution is not achieved.
While speaking in Kyiv, Zelenskyy reflected positively on his previous discussions with Trump, expressing hope that the Republican leader would succeed in his efforts to end the war. He asserted, "This can only be done with Ukraine, and otherwise it simply will not work because Russia does not want to end the war, and Ukraine does."
