Washington: America is in the grip of extreme heat these days. Especially in the eastern coastal states, temperature and humidity have increased the problems of the people. The situation is such that many big programmes organised on the occasion of the country's 250th Independence Day have had to be changed. Some events have been temporarily closed, while parades in many cities have been cancelled.

The 'Great American State Fair' held in Washington DC was also affected due to the scorching heat. Keeping in mind the safety of the people, the organisers decided to keep the fair closed for some time on Friday. He says that the biggest priority at this time is the safety of the people coming to the programme: artists, staff and volunteers. Therefore the fair was kept closed till 5 pm.

Why did the heat increase the concern?

According to the US Meteorological Department, the heat index in Washington DC can reach 113 degrees Fahrenheit or about 45 degrees Celsius. Heat index not only tells the temperature but also includes the humidity of the air. When both temperature and humidity are high, the body feels hotter than the actual temperature. In such a situation, staying outside for a long time increases the risk of heat stroke and dehydration.

In which cities were the programs cancelled?

In view of the extreme heat, the Independence Day parades in Leesburg, Virginia and Laurel and Takoma Park in Maryland have been cancelled. The local administration says that it would not be safe to organise an event in such heat amidst a crowd of thousands of people. Therefore, this decision was taken as a precaution.

Have all functions been cancelled?

The famous 'Capital Fourth Concert' held every year in the US Parliament House complex will be held as scheduled. However, special arrangements have been made for the people coming there so that they can avoid the problems caused by the heat.

What advice has the administration given to the people?

US Capitol Police and health officials have appealed to people to carry adequate amount of water with them when going out, wear light clothes and not stay in the sun for too long. The elderly, children and those with pre-existing medical conditions have been advised to take special precautions.

America is currently preparing to celebrate Independence Day, but the scorching heat has slowed down the pace of these celebrations. The administration says that people's safety comes first and considering the weather, additional steps can be taken if needed.
