An emergency meeting was held at the United Nations (Social media)
World News: Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened an emergency session on Sunday. The meeting was called in response to the coordinated military strikes carried out by the US and Israel on three of Iran’s major nuclear facilities. The global community gathered to deliberate on the repercussions of the attacks and potential diplomatic responses.
US President Donald Trump confirmed the offensive, calling it “the most decisive military operation in history.” According to Trump, the operation, conducted jointly with Israel, targeted Iran’s nuclear sites at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.
He claimed the strikes inflicted severe damage on Iran’s nuclear capabilities and justified the action by stating that Iran had repeatedly withdrawn from diplomatic negotiations.
During the UNSC meeting, Russia and China firmly condemned the US-led action. China’s UN envoy, Fu Cong, remarked, “Peace cannot be established through the use of force. There is still room for dialogue.”
Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya drew parallels with the 2003 Iraq invasion, saying, “Just as lies were spread in the name of Iraq, Iran is now being targeted. The US never learns from history.”
Iran had itself requested the emergency session. Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, accused the United States and Israel of undermining diplomatic efforts and fueling regional tensions. He also criticized the Western use of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), alleging that it is being manipulated as a political tool.
Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confirmed that the Fordo uranium enrichment site, located deep under a mountain, sustained damage. However, there has been no reported radiation leak. Additional strikes were also confirmed at Natanz and Isfahan, two other key nuclear facilities.
Russia, China, and Pakistan submitted a joint ceasefire resolution at the UNSC. Although the draft resolution does not explicitly mention the United States or Israel, it clearly condemns the strikes carried out on Iranian territory. To pass, the resolution requires support from at least nine member states and no veto from any of the five permanent members.
British Ambassador Barbara Woodward stressed that military action alone cannot resolve the crisis, urging all sides to prioritize diplomacy and exercise restraint.
This UNSC meeting highlights the escalating global implications of the conflict in the Middle East. While the US and Israel frame their actions as vital for national and regional security, Iran, Russia, and China see them as violations of sovereignty. As the world watches, one critical question remains: Can diplomacy prevail in this volatile environment, or is armed conflict becoming the new global language?
