New York: In the US midterm elections, candidates of Indian origin won many important contests. Piya Dandiya, the Democratic candidate from Florida's 22nd Congressional seat, won a place in the House of Representatives by defeating Republican Cassie Askar. Suhas Subramaniam from Virginia won again, while Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller was also re-elected to her post. On the other hand, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy lost to Democrat Amy Acton in the race for governor of Ohio.

Why is Piya Dandiya's victory important in Florida?

Piya Dandiya won from Florida's newly redrawn 22nd Congressional District. According to election reports, she got 51.9 percent of the votes, while her rival Cassi Askar got 49.1 percent of the votes. With this victory, Dandiya will become the first South Asian American to reach the US House of Representatives from Florida. This contest was among the most talked about congressional seats in South Florida.

Dandiya's political campaign focused on issues such as education, inflation and economic opportunities. Before entering politics, she was a teacher and high school principal in Harlem, New York. She also played a role in establishing schools for students from low-income families. Born to Indian immigrant parents, Dandiya grew up in Palm Beach County, Florida.

What did Suhas Subramaniam and Aruna Miller achieve?

Democrat Suhas Subramaniam from Virginia's 10th Congressional District defeated Republican Dave Beckwith to win a second term in the House of Representatives. He became the first Indian-American MP to represent this seat. In Maryland, Aruna Miller again won the post of Lieutenant Governor along with Governor Wes Moore. Born in Hyderabad, Miller came to America with her family at the age of seven.

Why did Vivek Ramaswamy lose in Ohio?

Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy lost to Democratic nominee Amy Acton in the race for Ohio governor. Acton's victory made her the first woman elected governor of Ohio and ended two decades of Republican rule in the state. Inflation and access to health services were major issues in the election campaign. Ramaswamy had received the support of President Donald Trump, but this support could not translate into victory.

What were the results of other candidates of Indian origin?

The results for Indian-American candidates were not uniform. Several major candidates won, while in some contests the results were unclear as counting continued. Ro Khanna and Ami Bera from California and Pooja Sethi from Texas were also in the fray. In the election reports, the contests between Nitya Raman and Amish Shah were also described as close.

What will be the impact of midterm elections?

In America, midterm elections held between the tenure of the President decide the political balance in Congress. In this election, voting took place for all 435 seats of the House of Representatives and 35 out of 100 seats of the Senate. Apart from this, elections for the post of Governor were also held in many states. The results will determine which party's influence in Congress will increase and how much support it will get for legislative decisions during the remaining term of the President.
