The US may attack Venezuela: US military activities in Venezuela, the country with the world's largest oil reserves, have created a stir on the global stage. US President Donald Trump has deployed naval warships and nuclear-powered fast attack submarines towards the coast of Venezuela. After this move, questions are being raised about whether the US is preparing for military intervention in Venezuela.

However, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has made it clear that US intrusion into his country is 'in no way possible.' Addressing his soldiers, Nicolás Maduro said that today we are stronger than yesterday. Today we are better prepared to protect peace, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

US naval deployment and nuclear submarines

US Navy Chief Admiral Daryl Claude confirmed that warships have been deployed to the South American coast. According to a US official, seven warships and a nuclear submarine will be there already or next week. These include more than 4,500 US troops, including about 2,200 Marines.

Venezuela's UN ambassador Samuel Moncada called the deployment a "massive propaganda campaign" and said it was an excuse for military intervention. He said Venezuela is a sovereign and independent country that poses no threat to anyone.

Venezuela's counter-preparations

Venezuela has deployed warships and drones off its coast. In addition, 15,000 soldiers have been deployed on the Colombian border, and thousands of militia members are being recruited. Nicolás Maduro thanked Colombia and said that he has sent 25,000 additional troops to the border to crack down on 'narco-terrorist gangs.'

US vs. Maduro: Drugs or Oil?

The US has accused Venezuela of cocaine trafficking, and the Trump administration has designated the Cartel de los Soles as a terrorist organization. Nicolas Maduro has been accused of drug trafficking and regime change, while the US has offered a $50 million bounty for his arrest.

Analysts believe the real motive may be to gain control of Venezuela's vast oil reserves. Venezuela has the world's largest oil reserves, estimated at more than 300 billion barrels.

Oil and geopolitical importance

Venezuela's oil reserves are bigger than Saudi Arabia's, Russia's, and Iran's. US sanctions and economic crises have affected oil production, which has affected the global oil market and geopolitical balance. This move by the US is being seen as an excuse to stop drugs, but from a strategic point of view, oil and regional dominance are believed to be the real objectives.
