Putin Praised PM Modi: Russia's President Vladimir Putin on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that he is a "very intelligent leader" who always keeps the interest of his country first. Addressing the plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, Putin also emphasized the strong and historical relations between India and Russia.
According to the reports, Putin said that the people of India and Russia can never forget the deep ties between the two countries. He said, "About 15 years ago, we announced a special strategic partnership, and that is the best description of our relationship. Prime Minister Modi is a very wise leader who always thinks about his country first."
Putin's statement comes amid reports that he may visit India later this year. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is also expected to visit New Delhi to discuss summit preparations and bilateral issues.
Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club on the issue of US tariffs and Russian oil imports, Putin said that if India succumbs to foreign pressure and stops buying Russian oil, it could suffer economic losses of $9 to $10 billion. However, he expressed confidence that Prime Minister Modi will not bow to any external pressure.
Putin said, "This is not a matter of politics, but a purely economic calculation. If India abandons our energy resources, it will suffer losses. Estimates vary, but some say it could be as high as $9-10 billion. If India refuses, sanctions could be imposed, and it will still suffer losses."
