International News: Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has made a major offer to Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to end the ongoing war. He has proposed a face-to-face meeting with Putin. Zelensky made this statement on Thursday after Donald Trump’s special envoy held talks with the Russian leader in Moscow.
Trump on Wednesday had described the meeting between his envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Putin as very productive. Despite this, the United States continues to impose sanctions on countries doing business with Russia. An additional 25% tariff has been imposed on several countries, including India.
Zelensky posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had spoken to Trump over the phone call. He said Trump told him he could meet with Putin very soon and that European leaders had also discussed the matter. Ukraine has repeatedly said that finding a real solution at the leadership level could actually be effective. Zelensky emphasised that it is important to determine the timing of such formats and the issues to be addressed.
The Ukrainian leader said he spent Thursday speaking with multiple world leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as French and Italian officials. He added that there will also be discussions at the level of national security advisors. Taking a sharp dig at Russia, Zelensky said the country that started this war (Russia) must now take real steps to end its aggression.
