New Delhi: Tea is taken as a dose of vitamins and a mood booster for the Indian body. But consuming tea after meals can push you towards illness. Definitely, drinking tea is not a bad habit but the timing matters. According to the convenor of the Dietary Guidelines Committee, Dr. D Raghunath Rao, people consuming tea after meals are indirectly inviting disease towards them.
Tea contains substances like caffeine, tannins, L-theanine, antioxidants, etc. The excessive amount of caffeine and tannins present there directly affects our body's nutrient level. These toxic substances are very harmful to our internal body as it reacts with the body acids and form toxic substances inside the organs and blood.
Tea directly hampers the absorption of nutrients from food in our body because caffeine and tannins together form a toxin. As per reports, drinking tea regularly after meals can cause serious health issues like indigestion, constipation, bloating, and acidity. The major impact of having tea is seen in our intestinal and stomach area.
According to Dr. Raghunath Rao, drinking tea at the right time will not hamper you. He also mentioned that consuming tea occasionally after meals will only cause minor stomach issues but if the habit turns into daily routine, one could experience serious health problems.
Anaemia
Tannins present in tea cause iron deficiency and reduce the intake of iron in your body from food. This will directly reduce blood flow and haemoglobin in our body.
Diabetes
Caffeine present in tea affects cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, which hampers the body's energy level. Also, consuming excessive amounts of tea adds extra calories to your body as it has milk and sugar. The large amount of sugar in the form of tea increases weight and causes diabetes.
Digestive problems
The main issues caused by tea are related to the stomach. Tea damages our digestive system. When you have a heavy meal, you will experience stomach pain, acidity, and indigestion, which is caused by the toxic ingredients consumed in the form of tea. Furthermore, Drinking tea just after the meal will directly decrease the protein content of the food and slow down the digestive process more.
