Nirmala Sitharaman opts for a Kanjeevaram saree from Tamil Nadu for budget 2026 (x)
New Delhi: As Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday was presenting her ninth consecutive Budget, the fashion enthusiast were all eyes on the handloom that she picked for the big day.
While the focus will remain on the Budget but Nirmala Sitharaman's saree also draws attention because of the choice of handloom.
The Finance Minister wore a magenta-maroon Kanchipuram silk saree that also featured checks design in mustard yellow. The saree also featured coffee-brown border with yellow thread work design in the border area.
Nirmala Sitharaman styled the silk saree with contrasting yellow blouse or sweater, to give a modern and bright look to the simple Kanchipuram saree.
By choosing the Kanchipuram saree this year, she paid tribute to the Tamil Nadu's age old weaving legacy, which is also her home state.
And according to political aspect, later this year the Tamil Nadu will hold elections, where the BJP is hoping to form its first government.

The Finance Minister has opted for the handloom since she presented her first budget in 2019. Since then, her each saree with beautiful embroidery and zari work has represented a different tale.
By choosing sarees from different states, she shows her continued support for India’s handloom traditions.
For the last year budget day, Nirmala Sitharaman wore an off-white handloom silk saree with fish-themed embroidery and a golden border. The saree was a gift from Padma awardee Dulari Devi.

The Finance Minister choose a Madhubani artwork design saree because that year Bihar went to elections in Novemeber.
