"Deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, which has claimed several precious lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families as they endure this profound loss. Praying for the speedy recovery of those injured and for strength, courage, and solace to all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy," Mamata Banerjee said.
Ten firefighters have also been admitted to AIIMS. They sustained injuries during relief operations.
Regarding the Malviya Nagar fire incident, local MLA Satish Upadhyay stated that preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit as the probable cause of the blaze. He noted that prior to the tragedy, no complaints of any kind had been received against this establishment, and its license remained valid until the year 2027.
According to the MLA, given the validity of the license and the absence of any complaints, the need for an inspection was not deemed necessary. He further mentioned that a restaurant was also operating within the premises. Satish Upadhyay claimed that the building was equipped with electronic locks, which jammed during the fire. This created severe difficulties for the people trapped inside to make their exit, thereby exacerbating the already dire situation. He identified the property owner as Lavkesh Bajaj. Although an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the precise causes of the fire, a short circuit is currently being considered the primary reason behind the incident.
Eight members of a single family from Gurugram met a tragic end in the Malviya Nagar fire incident. The deceased include Vivek Agarwal, his wife Tarjani Agarwal, and his mother, Premlata Agarwal. According to reports, Vivek Agarwal was on the fourth floor of the building when the fire broke out. In his initial attempt to escape, he made his way down to the ground floor; however, upon finding the exit route blocked, he headed toward the basement. Once trapped there, he called several relatives to plead for help, informing them that he was unable to find a way out.
The family was already reeling under a mountain of grief. Vivek's father, Radhe Shyam Agarwal, had been hospitalized at Max Hospital for the past three or four days for the treatment of a lung-related ailment. His condition had deteriorated further on Tuesday. It was for this very reason that several family members, along with three relatives, were staying at the hotel where this horrific tragedy unfolded.
The MCD called for an inquiry into the fire incident that broke out at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, in which at least 21 people lost their lives. Satya Sharma, Chairperson of the MCD Standing Committee, stated, "An inquiry into this incident has been called for. Details regarding the age of the building and its ownership are currently being gathered. Action will be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence."
The rescue operation launched following a massive fire at a restaurant in Delhi's Malviya Nagar has concluded. Ravinder Singh, Divisional Officer (DO) of the Delhi Fire Service, stated that the fire has been completely brought under control and the rescue operation has been successfully completed. Twenty-one people lost their lives in this tragic incident. DO Ravinder Singh said, "The rescue operation has been successfully completed." The fire has been completely extinguished. All those injured or deceased in the incident have been transported to the hospital."
The Chief Fire Officer further stated, "Not a single window has been left open to ensure proper ventilation or smoke extraction." In the event of a fire, structures built in this manner act like chimneys. As soon as a fire breaks out, the enclosed shafts immediately channel dense smoke and intense heat up to the upper floors. This occurs with such speed that the occupants inside become completely cut off and have no time to make a safe exit. While conducting rescue operations at Prime Asia, we immediately realized that the building completely lacked an internal fire safety system."
The chief fire officer further stated that, during the search operation, he thoroughly inspected the building from top to bottom. The structure comprises a basement, a ground floor, and five upper floors. The entire building featured only a single staircase, located right next to the sole elevator, and the building is completely sealed off. The front facade is entirely covered, and every single window, including those in the bathrooms, has been tightly shut.
Abhilash Kumar Malik, Chief Fire Officer of the South Delhi District, stated, "We received a report regarding a fire at a restaurant at 8:50 AM." Initially, seven fire tenders and an Assistant Divisional Officer were dispatched to the scene. However, as the volume of incoming calls increased, we augmented both the number of vehicles and the rank of the officers deployed. Upon their arrival, our team carried out firefighting operations and conducted a search and rescue mission. We safely evacuated 39 people from the premises and admitted them to the nearest hospital; the total number of victims has been distributed across two separate hospitals."
Dr. Sandeep Budhiraja, Group Medical Director at Max Hospital, where 39 people were brought, stated that 18 of those brought to Max arrived in a deceased state. Three people arrived at AIIMS in a deceased state. So far, a total of 21 people have died. The condition of 15 others remains critical.
A total of 74 people have been evacuated from the collapsed building. Of these, 39 have been sent to Max Hospital, 3 to Malviya Nagar Hospital, and 32 to AIIMS and other hospitals.
Directly across the road from 'Flourish Stay Bed and Breakfast,' a man runs a shop selling mattresses and bedsheets. He sets up a roadside stall in front of the guest house, sheltered by asbestos sheets, to sell cotton-filled mattresses. During the fire, his mattresses proved invaluable. The mattress vendor's name is Riyazuddin Mansuri. He recounted that the fire broke out between 8:00 and 8:30 AM. People were trapped as high up as the fifth floor. He pulled out every mattress from his shop and laid them out on both sides of the road; four or five people jumped onto them. Some sustained injuries.
This guest house was operating under the Delhi Government's Bed and Breakfast (B&B) scheme. This scheme is an initiative of the Central Government, which was implemented in 2010 during the Commonwealth Games. Under this scheme, six rooms were authorized for B&B operations. Such establishments do not require clearances from the Fire Department, the MCD, or the police. There are over 1,000 such B&B establishments currently operating in Delhi.
According to reports, the entire guest house is enclosed in glass. When the fire broke out, smoke began to spread so rapidly that people were unable to escape. People had to be evacuated by breaking the glass panes; by the time they were rescued, however, most had already sustained burns.

Aam Aadmi Party's Delhi President, Saurabh Bharadwaj, commented on the fire incident at a restaurant in Malviya Nagar, stating: "In February, a fire broke out in Palam, and nine people were burnt to death. The government promised to conduct an inquiry, yet three months later, the investigation report has still not been released.
A fire broke out in Vivek Vihar; the fire brigade arrived without water, and people lost their lives. Now, between 20 and 21 people have been burnt to death here. The government ought to acknowledge that its fire brigade arrived late and express regret over the matter. Instead, the government has activated its 'toolkit.'You are shifting the blame onto the very people who have come here from outside out of sheer necessity—those who, compelled by circumstances, are staying in small houses and hotels while seeking medical treatment for their family members?"
CM Rekha Gupta stated, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of several lives in this devastating fire tragedy that occurred in Malviya Nagar. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families. CM Rekha Gupta further informed that immediately upon receiving the information, teams from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, DDMA, CATS Ambulance Service, and other emergency agencies rushed to the scene. Rescue and relief operations were launched, leading to the safe evacuation of many individuals. The government is closely monitoring the entire situation.
