5 Dead As Heavy Rain Wreaks Havoc in Kolkata Days Before Durga Puja (X)
Kolkata Rains: Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in Kilkata and disrupted the normal life of people in the surrounding areas. Due to incessant rainfall, several places were inundated and heavy traffic jam was witnessed in the city. As many as five people have died in the rain-hit areas in Kolkata.
Notably, Garia Kamdahari area in the city recorded 332 mm of rain in a few hours, while Jodhpur Park received 285 mm and Kalighat 280 mm.
Due to the heavy rainfall, roads are flooded, disrupting rail and metro services in the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal could witness heavy rain as well as in several districts in South Bengal.
Following the heavy rainfall in the city, waterlogging was witnessed in the mid-section of the Blue Line, mainly between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar stations, resulting into the suspension of services on this route, according to the news agency PTI report. As per a spokesperson for Metro Railway Kolkata, "Truncated services are being run between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations." He further added that normal service could be resumed soon as water is being pumped out, and staff are continously trying to resolve the issue.

Due to the heavy rain in the city, durga puja preparations have been affected particularly in Howrah area. A Kolkata Municipal Corporation was quoted saying to HT, "We have received emergency instructions to run drainage pumps to clear the roads."
