HMP Virus: Assam has reported its first case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection this season, with a 10-month-old child testing positive for the virus, according to officials cited by news agency PTI on Saturday.

Hospital Preparedness and Patient Condition

The infant is currently receiving treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh and is reported to be in a “stable” condition. The child was admitted to AMCH four days ago, presenting cold-related symptoms, as stated by Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan, the superintendent of the state-run hospital.

Confirmation of HMPV Infection

The confirmation of HMPV infection came after test results from the ICMR-RMRC laboratory in Lahowal were received. Dr. Bhuyan explained that testing for influenza and flu-related cases is a routine practice, emphasizing that “it was a routine test during which the HMPV infection was detected. The child is stable now. It is a common virus, and there is nothing to worry about.”

Historical Context of HMPV

Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty, a senior scientist at ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre in Dibrugarh, noted that since 2014, 110 HMPV cases have been detected in Dibrugarh district. He confirmed that this is the first case of the season and that HMPV infections are not uncommon, stating, “Every year, it is detected, and nothing is new.”

Understanding Human Metapneumovirus

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a common respiratory virus that typically results in mild cold-like symptoms. Although it has been circulating among humans since the 1970s, it was first identified by scientists in 2001. Research indicates that hMPV accounts for 4-16% of acute respiratory infections globally, with cases generally peaking between November and May. While most adults have developed immunity through previous exposure, hMPV can lead to more severe symptoms in infants encountering it for the first time and in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Recent HMPV Cases Across India

In addition to Assam, other states have reported recent HMPV cases. In Gujarat, an eight-year-old boy tested positive for HMPV, bringing the total number of cases in the state to three. Meanwhile, Maharashtra has identified two suspected cases of HMPV in Nagpur; both patients are reportedly in good health. As health officials continue monitoring these developments, they emphasize the importance of awareness regarding HMPV and its implications for public health.
