Dhaka: Foreign policy expert Sushant Sarin has expressed concern over the current political and security situation in Bangladesh, saying that the country seems to be returning to its "former Pakistani" identity and this is the most serious period since 1971. Sarin described the recent developments as proceeding according to Pakistani rules and indicated that the regime in Bangladesh today is taking some such steps which it is taking under the influence of Pakistan.
Sarin said that the government and governance system of Bangladesh are acting on the lines of Pakistan in the current situation. According to him, the decisions being taken there and the way the balance of power is shifting with Pakistan are matters of equal concern. He also said that the street violence, persecution of minorities, and government response are signs that Bangladesh is now searching for its roots in the pre-1971 era.
The expert also said that there are signs of defense and military relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan, and it may also be possible for Pakistani soldiers or advisors to reach there in the future. He claimed that there are many people who see Pakistan-related interests influencing the policies of Bangladesh. On this he said that if Bangladesh signs any kind of military agreement with Pakistan, it will be a very strong signal from the point of view of regional politics.
Sarin warned that such relations can have an impact not only at the diplomatic level but also at the security level. He said that if Bangladesh takes forward the defense agreement with Pakistan, the chances of Pakistani forces being deployed there may also increase later. This issue is considered more sensitive amid South Asian tensions.
The expert also suggested that India should reconsider its strategic stance towards Bangladesh. He believes that in the current situation, remaining calm can mean a strategy prepared according to the context, but in the meantime, if the relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan deepen further, then diplomatic and security challenges for India may increase.
In recent times, political instability, protests, and terrorism or violence against minority communities in Bangladesh have made the atmosphere more tense. The assassination of a prominent youth leader in 2025 and the protests that followed have deepened political divisions and social anger within the country, which is a major matter of concern for experts.
