Bengaluru is reeling from torrential rains on May 18-19, 2025, which flooded roads and homes, claiming three lives, including two electrocutions. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, addressing the crisis, outlined a comprehensive plan, claiming 70% of 210 flood-prone areas have been fixed, with ₹2,000 crore allocated for stormwater drains.
Severity of the Floods
The city recorded 104-130 mm of rainfall, submerging areas like Sai Layout, Koramangala, and BTM Layout. The IMD’s orange alert warns of continued heavy rain, with Bagalkot, Belgaum, and Kolar also at risk.

Public and Political Backlash
Residents and opposition parties slammed the Congress government’s handling of the crisis. BJP leader Amit Malviya called Bengaluru an “ATM” for the state, while former CM Basavaraj Bommai accused it of ruining the city’s reputation. X posts echoed frustration, with entrepreneur Dilip Kumar mocking the lack of drainage despite Bengaluru’s tech prowess.
