Bhupen Bora resigned from the Congress earlier this week. His decision surprised many party workers. Soon after, senior leaders reached out to him. Rahul Gandhi reportedly spoke to him personally. Bora then hinted he might reconsider. He said he would take a final call after consultations. The drama kept Assam politics on edge.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed Bora will join the BJP on February 22. He said the party’s national president has approved the move. Sarma described it as a “homecoming.” He added Bora would receive full respect. The Chief Minister also said BJP doors are open. He promised support in future elections.
Sarma visited Bora’s home in Guwahati. Bora’s family welcomed the Chief Minister warmly. His wife and son performed a traditional welcome. The visit sent strong political signals. Earlier, Sarma had publicly invited Bora. He even hinted at offering a safe seat in assembly elections. The optics suggested confidence.
During the day, Bora told reporters he would decide by night. He wanted to speak to supporters and local leaders. He said he belongs to Lakhimpur district. Consultation with close associates was important. Bora also targeted some Congress leaders indirectly. He said he could stay in APCC, but not in “APCC(R).” The remark was seen as a dig at internal rivals.
Bora alleged he was denied a ticket in the Samaguri bypoll. Senior leaders had proposed his name. But the ticket went elsewhere. He expressed disappointment over that decision. He also mentioned past disagreements. In 2021, he opposed the alliance with AIUDF. He had written letters to party leadership.
If Bora joins BJP, it could weaken Congress in Assam further. Sarma claimed more leaders may follow him. The timing is crucial before future elections. Congress is already struggling with internal divisions. Bora’s exit may deepen that crisis. BJP appears confident about expanding its base. The coming days will clarify the final outcome.
