New Delhi: Old and discarded hospital registers are being put to productive use through a paper recycling initiative launched by Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital. The campaign, conducted on October 29, 2026, collected 2,063 kilograms of obsolete registers, which were exchanged for recycled paper to be used across the hospital’s departments and offices.
The initiative was undertaken to promote responsible resource management while also freeing up storage space within the hospital premises.
According to estimates by the Kayakalp Manthan initiative, recycling the collected paper is expected to contribute to saving approximately 25 trees, 2,600 kilograms of wood and 37,134 litres of water. It is also projected to help prevent the emission of around 1,114 kilograms of carbon dioxide.
The figures underline the environmental benefits of recycling paper that would otherwise have been discarded as waste.
The campaign was conducted under the leadership of Director Dr Kavita Sharma, with continued encouragement from Medical Superintendent Dr Charu Bamba and guidance from Principal Dr Geetika Khanna.
The initiative was implemented through the Kayakalp Unit under the supervision of its Officer-in-Charge, Dr Malini R. Kapoor, in collaboration with the General Stores Department and the Y Waste Wednesday Foundation.
This marks the hospital’s second major paper recycling campaign. The effort highlights how proper waste management and recycling can turn discarded materials into useful resources while reducing pressure on the environment.
The recycled paper will be put to use in various hospital departments and administrative offices, supporting more sustainable day-to-day operations.
