J&K: Amid the somber backdrop of a mysterious illness that has claimed 17 lives in Jammu and Kashmir’s Badhaal, the local administration organized a heartfelt Republic Day function for the affected villagers on Sunday. Over 350 residents of the village are currently under observation in three separate facilities as the authorities continue their investigation into the tragic deaths.

Rajouri DC leads Republic Day observance

Rajouri Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abhishek Sharma marked the 76th Republic Day with the residents of Badhaal, underscoring the administration's commitment to supporting the families during this crisis. The event commenced with children from the village singing the national anthem, an act that drew appreciation from the DC.

Sharma lauded the enthusiasm of the young participants, emphasizing the importance of instilling national pride among the next generation. Expressing his condolences to the bereaved families, he assured them of the administration's unwavering support and solidarity in these difficult times.

Awareness campaigns and welfare initiatives

During the event, DC Sharma reiterated the administration's focus on raising awareness about various government welfare schemes designed for the tribal population. “It is our priority to ensure that every family in Badhaal is aware of and can access the benefits of welfare schemes launched by the government,” he stated.

The displaced villagers were encouraged to actively participate in awareness campaigns and avail themselves of opportunities in areas like health, education, livelihood, and social welfare. In addition, the revenue department distributed blankets to families recently relocated from Badhaal, providing some relief to those enduring harsh circumstances.

The tragedy in Badhaal

Between December 7 and January 19, 17 villagers—including 13 children—lost their lives to a mysterious illness in the Rajouri district. The fatalities involved three families, prompting authorities to move affected residents to observation facilities for their safety.

A special Republic Day lunch

In another gesture of solidarity, National Conference leader and Budhal MLA Javed Iqbal Choudhary, along with the administration of Government Medical College Rajouri, hosted a Republic Day lunch for the affected families. Joining the villagers, MLA Choudhary and medical college principal AS Bhatia assured continued support to help them recover from the tragedy. Currently, 53 villagers are under observation at the medical college, while around 300 others are being housed at the Government Nursing College and Government Boys' Higher Secondary School.
