New Delhi: Security has been beefed up outside the residence of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi. The Delhi Police took this step after receiving fresh threat inputs. According to officials, Gyanesh Kumar already has Z-plus security, but in view of the new intelligence inputs and the ongoing protests in the capital, additional policemen have been deployed outside his house.

A senior police officer said that local district police have also been instructed to increase their security presence. Since protests are already underway in the New Delhi district, all security agencies have been asked to work in coordination to prevent any untoward incidents.

India Block leaders protesting

The increased security for Gyanesh Kumar comes amid protests by INDIA bloc leaders, led by Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. The opposition has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

What is Z-Plus security?

Z-plus is the second-highest security category in the country, above which the Prime Minister and his immediate family members are protected by the Special Protection Group (SPG). Z-plus security involves approximately 50 security personnel deployed in different shifts. Additional security arrangements are made for the protectee's residence and convoy.

Delhi Police gets 23,000 additional security personnel

A large deployment of central forces is also underway to maintain law and order in the capital amid the protests. The Home Ministry has provided 221 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), or approximately 23,000 personnel, to the Delhi Police between October 8 and 12.

These include CRPF companies being brought in from Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh. These additional forces will help the Delhi Police handle protests, protect key government buildings, and maintain law and order in central Delhi.
