Three innocent children lost their lives in this terrible accident. (Social media)
National News: As the first rays of the sun touched the quiet streets of Chemmankuppam this morning, no one imagined that the day would unfold into a devastating tragedy. A school van, filled with laughing children on their way to build a future, became the victim of a horrifying accident.
The incident occurred at an unmanned railway crossing, where the school van attempted to cross the tracks without any warning signals or safety barriers. At that moment, a high-speed passenger train bound for Chidambaram collided with the van, dragging it nearly 50 meters. The impact was so powerful that the van was left completely mangled.
Three children died on the spot. Ten others, along with the van driver, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the government hospital in Cuddalore. Doctors have confirmed that several of the injured are in critical condition, and the death toll may rise.
One of the most pressing questions arising from the tragedy is why unmanned crossings still exist—especially in areas frequented by school vehicles. Locals claim they had raised safety concerns many times, but their appeals were ignored by the authorities.
Initial statements from railway and district officials suggest that the van driver may have acted in haste, attempting to cross despite seeing the approaching train. However, many argue that if there had been a gate, a signal, or even a guard posted, the incident could have been entirely prevented.
Soon after the crash, villagers rushed to the scene and began helping the injured, pulling out children even before emergency services arrived. As grief gave way to anger, residents gathered at the site, demanding accountability and criticizing the lack of proper safety infrastructure at railway crossings.
Although the Railway Protection Force and district administration have launched an investigation, the public is demanding concrete action—not just another report. They fear that if the system continues to fail, more innocent lives will be lost and reduced to mere statistics.
This incident was not merely a collision between a van and a train—if reforms are introduced, the cost will continue to be paid in the lives of our children.
