The Congress party marked its first win in the Haryana Assembly Elections 2024 after Aftab Ahmed emerged victorious in the Nuh constituency. Ahmed triumphed over the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate Tahir Hussain, defeating him with a commanding margin of 46,963 votes. Ahmed secured a total of 91,833 votes, while Hussain finished second with 44,870 votes. BJP’s Sanjay Singh lagged behind in third place, securing 15,902 votes.

Aftab Ahmed's reaction to victory

After his win, Aftab Ahmed expressed his gratitude towards the people of Nuh, his party workers, and the Congress leadership. He vowed to honour the promises made during his campaign, emphasising his commitment to the development of the constituency.

"I thank the people of my constituency, the party workers, and the leadership. This victory proves that people have rejected BJP's divisive politics over the past decade. The faith they have shown in Congress will be repaid through hard work and dedication to the promises we made," Ahmed stated in his victory speech.

Key promises of the winning candidate

Aftab Ahmed campaigned on promises of implementing a law against lynching in the name of cow protection and conducting a judicial inquiry into the communal violence that shook Nuh last year. Ahmed, who served as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Haryana Assembly, had raised concerns prior to the outbreak of violence, warning the administration about the impending tensions. However, his warnings were allegedly ignored, leading to significant loss of life and property.

Ahmed's re-election from the Muslim-majority Nuh constituency is seen as a mandate against the communal violence and for the inclusive governance he promises to deliver.
