New Delhi: People's demand for domestic piped natural gas (PNG) connections has increased rapidly in Delhi. According to Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) officials, calls for new connections have almost tripled in the last one week. Where earlier around 100 calls were received every day, now this number has increased to around 300 per day. Officials say that after the news of shortage of LPG cylinders and black marketing, people are showing more interest in taking PNG connections.
IGL officials say that in view of the increasing demand, additional teams have been deployed. The company currently has the capacity to activate more than 1,000 domestic PNG connections daily in Delhi. The company says that based on the number of applications being received, efforts are being made to provide connections as soon as possible so that people do not have to face the problem of gas.
According to officials, it is not just new consumers who are responsible for the increasing calls. Many such people are also contacting who had earlier taken PNG connection but later got it switched off. Till last week, about 150-200 calls were received every day for resumption of such connections, but now this number has increased to more than 350.
Meanwhile, some industrial consumers have complained that IGL has imposed a limit of 80 percent on gas supply. Officials say that this step has been taken under government instructions. According to industry representatives of Mundka Industrial Area, many factories have been affected by this decision and the industries running gas-based generators are facing more problems.
Trade and industry organizations of Delhi have expressed concern over this decision. They say that due to increasing tension in West Asia, there is uncertainty regarding gas supply, but it is not right to put its burden directly on the industries.
Industry organizations say that many MSMEs are already operating at low profits and if the cut in gas supply continues for a long time, it could impact both production and employment.
