New Delhi: Delhi's air has remained continuously poisonous since Diwali. In the last month, the level of pollution has increased so much that common people have now started openly protesting against the government. On Sunday, there was a big demonstration against pollution at India Gate also. The atmosphere suddenly deteriorated in the evening, when tension between the crowd and the police increased and some protesters used chili spray on the policemen.
Protestors were trying to cross the barricades in the C-Hexagon area. The police explained to them that ambulances and medical teams were passing through there, so it would not be right to block the road. People still did not step back, and some broke the barricades and sat on the road. When the police tried to disperse the crowd, suddenly some protesters threw chili spray. This caused a severe burning sensation in the eyes and face of many policemen, and they had to be immediately taken to RML Hospital.
A senior officer said that the police were only trying to keep the traffic and emergency routes open, but the protesters became increasingly aggressive. According to officials, it was explained to the crowd several times that removing the barricade could cause ambulances to get stuck, but people did not listen.
The officer said that after the chili spray attack, it had become necessary to remove the crowd from C-Hexagon, so that the situation does not worsen.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahala said that this is the first time that chili spray has been used on the police during crowd control. He said several officers suffered severe eye burns and were undergoing treatment. DCP clearly said that strict action will be taken against the people involved in this attack.
The air in Delhi has been at dangerous levels for the last several weeks. On Sunday, the city's AQI was recorded at 391, which falls in the 'very poor' category. The air reached 'severe' levels in many monitoring stations. The continuously deteriorating air has increased the problems of children, the elderly, and sick people.
People troubled by these conditions gathered at India Gate and demanded immediate action from the government. Delhi's pollution is no longer just a matter of statistics. The public anger and the crowds taking to the streets show that people are now ready to fight directly for clean air.
