Delhi: A 35-year-old woman from Delhi, Neetu Singh, allegedly kidnapped a three-month-old baby from Safdarjung Hospital last week, deceiving her family and friends into believing she had delivered the child after months of faking a pregnancy. Neetu's shocking actions were uncovered after police arrested her on Thursday and returned the child to his biological parents.
Neetu, who had been unable to conceive due to medical issues, reportedly faked her pregnancy for months. Her elaborate ruse began when she befriended a 32-year-old woman at Safdarjung Hospital, who was receiving treatment for abdominal pain. The woman, who had been at the hospital for three days, stated that Neetu frequently visited her, offering comfort and companionship.
On the morning of the kidnapping, around 10:15 a.m., the woman stepped out to buy something, leaving her three-month-old child with Neetu. It was then that Neetu allegedly abducted the infant and fled the premises, setting off a chain of events that would eventually lead to her arrest.
After the baby was reported missing around 2 p.m., the police quickly sprung into action, reviewing CCTV footage and piecing together clues. A senior police officer confirmed that Neetu had left her bag in the waiting hall, and inside it, authorities found bus and metro tickets that would ultimately lead them to her whereabouts.
Police traced an auto driver who confirmed he had transported Neetu and the child to Rohini's Bhim Rao Ambedkar Hospital. Further investigation revealed CCTV footage from the hospital showing Neetu entering a car with the baby and two men. The vehicle was traced to Neetu’s husband, Rajiv Singh.
When questioned, Neetu's husband claimed he and his father had picked her up from the hospital after she told them she had delivered a baby. However, neither he nor his father-in-law suspected that the baby was not a newborn. It was only after Neetu's arrest that the shocking truth came to light.
Neetu confessed to the kidnapping, revealing that her inability to conceive led her to lie about her pregnancy for months. She told authorities that she had even traveled to her family's home in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, to keep up the façade. Last week, she phoned her in-laws, claiming she had delivered a baby at BR Ambedkar Hospital, a lie that ultimately led to the abduction.
Neetu and her husband were taken into custody for questioning, and the kidnapped baby was safely returned to his parents. Authorities continue to investigate the case, and police officials have assured that they will take appropriate action against Neetu for her actions.
