New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events just hours before the Delhi Assembly elections, two employees associated with the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office were detained by the police after being caught with Rs. 5 lakh in cash. The incident, which took place on Tuesday, has raised serious questions about election integrity as the national capital gears up for a crucial voting day.

Police intercept CM office staff carrying cash

Acting on a tip-off, Delhi Police officials, along with a Flying Squad Team (FST), intercepted the individuals and recovered the cash. The detained employees, identified as Gaurav and Ajit Singh, were allegedly transporting the money for election-related activities.

“We received a call about some individuals being caught with Rs. 5 lakh. Our team reached the location, and the FST handed over two men, namely Gaurav and Ajit. Both are attached to the Chief Minister’s Office, as per preliminary information. We have seized the money, and further investigation is underway. We are trying to ascertain the source of the cash, where it was brought from, and where it was being taken,” said Ravi Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South-East.

Allegations of poll pode violation

The matter gained further traction when the District Election Officer (DEO)/District Magistrate (DM) of South-East Delhi confirmed the incident on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The official post stated: “FST team found two individuals, Mr. Gaurav and Mr. Ajit Singh, in a car with Rs. 5 lakh. Mr. Gaurav stated that the money was received from Mr. Pankaj, PA to Ms. Atishi, for booth management in Giri Nagar, Kalkaji. The cash has been seized, and police are further investigating.”

The revelation has ignited a political storm, with rival parties alleging electoral malpractice. The timing of the cash seizure, just before voting commenced, has raised suspicions about possible attempts to influence voters.

Delhi votes today in crucial poll battle

Meanwhile, Delhi goes to polls today, with over 1.56 crore eligible voters set to cast their ballots from 7 AM onwards. Voting will be conducted across 13,766 polling stations in all 70 Assembly constituencies, where 699 candidates are in the fray.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is eyeing a third consecutive term, banking on its governance record and welfare schemes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making an aggressive push to reclaim power after over two decades, while the Congress, which once dominated Delhi politics under Sheila Dikshit, is attempting to stage a comeback after failing to win a single seat in the last two elections.

Electoral battle intensifies amid cash controversy

With allegations of poll violations surfacing, political tempers are running high. The BJP and Congress have demanded a thorough probe into the cash seizure, calling it a blatant violation of the Model Code of Conduct. The Election Commission has assured a fair and transparent inquiry into the matter.

The outcome of this high-stakes election will shape the future of Delhi’s governance and could have significant national implications. As polling progresses, all eyes will be on the Election Commission’s handling of the latest controversy.
