Nagpur: A farmers' protest in Nagpur has caused a 30-kilometer-long traffic jam on the Nagpur-Wardha highway. Following an order from the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court and discussions with two ministers sent by the government, the protesters have agreed to come to Mumbai on Thursday to discuss the matter with the Chief Minister.
But their protest will continue on the ground instead of the highway. If Thursday's talks don't provide a firm date for loan waivers, they will intensify their protest by blocking roads and trains
Prahar Janshakti Party leader Bachchu Kadu had announced the "Maha Yalgar March" due to the government's failure to fulfill its old promises. Thousands of farmers, driving 250 to 300 tractors, reached the Nagpur-Wardha Highway, NH-44, on Tuesday to press for a complete loan waiver and the complete clearing of debts on farmers' land records, among other demands..
This route is known for connecting North India with South India. Farmers continued the blockade on Wednesday, resulting in a traffic jam stretching for over 30 kilometers. Farmer leader Raju Shetty, leader of the separate Vidarbha movement Vamanrao Chatap, and Dhangar leader Mahadev Jankar also joined Bacchu Kadu in the protest.
The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court took suo motu cognizance of the long traffic jam on NH-44 on Wednesday. A bench headed by Justice Rajnish Vyas passed an order requiring protesters to clear the highway by 6 p.m.
The court stated that the farmers were only granted permission to protest for 24 hours. The protest continued beyond the stipulated time limit and should end before 6 p.m. Meanwhile, the government sent two state ministers, Ashish Jaiswal and Pankaj Bhoyar, to speak with the farmers. The government delegation spoke with the Chief Minister from the protest site and arranged a meeting for the farmer leaders with him on Thursday.
Following this, farmer leaders agreed to move their protest to a field instead of the highway. But they also warned that if a specific date for farmer loan waivers was not given during the Mumbai talks, they would intensify the protest and begin blocking roads and trains.
