The India Meteorological Department has issued a six-day weather alert, forecasting scattered thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar starting May 19, 2025. Driven by moist easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal and an active pre-monsoon trough, the region faces cloudy skies with potential for heavy showers. Other states, from Rajasthan to Assam, are also bracing for varied weather impacts.

Weather Dynamics in North India
The IMD attributes the impending rain in Delhi, UP, and Bihar to a robust pre-monsoon system. Delhi is likely to see intermittent storms, with temperatures dropping slightly. In Uttar Pradesh, cities like Lucknow and Varanasi may experience waterlogging in low-lying areas. Bihar, particularly Patna, faces risks of heavier downpours, prompting local authorities to monitor river levels. The IMD advises residents to avoid open fields during lightning and prepare for possible traffic disruptions.

Impact on Other States
Beyond the northern belt, the weather varies sharply. Northeastern states like Assam and Meghalaya are set for intense rainfall, raising concerns about flash floods. Southern states, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu, anticipate moderate showers, offering relief from recent heat. Conversely, Rajasthan and parts of Madhya Pradesh are under heatwave warnings, with temperatures soaring above 40°C. Gujarat and Maharashtra expect partly cloudy skies with isolated rain, complicating agricultural planning.

Preparedness and Precautions
Authorities in affected regions are on high alert. In Delhi, civic bodies are clearing drainage systems to prevent flooding. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have deployed disaster response teams in vulnerable districts. Farmers are advised to protect crops from waterlogging, while urban dwellers prepare for power outages and road closures.

A Diverse Weather Landscape
This weather event highlights India’s climatic diversity, with rain, storms, and heatwaves unfolding simultaneously. As Delhi, UP, and Bihar brace for wet days, and other states navigate their challenges, coordinated preparedness is key. The IMD’s timely alert underscores the need for vigilance to mitigate disruptions and ensure safety across the nation.
