IMD Issues Storm Alert: 70 km/h Winds, Rain & Hail Likely Across 11 States (X)
New Delhi: The weather suddenly changed in the last week of April. While the entire country was sweltering with heat throughout the month, sudden rain, hailstorm, and strong winds on Thursday offered relief from the intense heat. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that strong storms, hail, and torrential rain will wreak havoc in many states over the next two days, starting May 1.
The IMD on Friday issued a weather alert for 11 states, warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain, hailstorms, and strong winds over the next two days.
Winds blowing at speeds of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour can not only topple trees and power poles, but also severely disrupt normal life.
According to the reports, this change is not sudden; rather, several systems, such as western disturbances and cyclonic circulations, are jointly affecting the weather. Its effects will be felt from North India to Northeast and South India.
Several states will face the risk of hailstorms, thunderstorms and heavy rain. Heatwaves will also continue in some areas. This means that both relief and danger will coexist. Therefore, the next 48 hours are considered extremely crucial.
The weather in Delhi-NCR has taken a sudden U-turn, both surprising and relieving. Strong winds, rain, and hailstorms that began Thursday evening brought temperatures across the region sharply down. There were also reports of trees being uprooted due to storm and traffic disruptions in several locations.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for the next few hours, indicating that the weather could worsen. Strong winds are expected to blow at speeds of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour, posing a threat to vulnerable structures and vehicles parked in the open. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected to increase. While this change has certainly brought relief from the heat, the weather's uncertainty is becoming a challenge for people, especially those who work or travel outdoors daily.
The effects of the storm are visible across the state. Thunderstorms and rain activity have increased sharply from western Uttar Pradesh to Purvanchal. Yellow alerts have been issued in several districts, warning of potential severe weather. Bundelkhand and eastern districts are more likely to experience hailstorms and lightning. In the past few hours, several areas have experienced dust storms, followed by light to moderate rain, leading to a drop in temperatures. However, this relief is not permanent, as the weather is constantly changing.
In Bihar, the weather has brought both relief and danger. Strong winds and rain have brought temperatures down in many districts, bringing relief from the heat. However, this has also increased the risk of lightning and hailstorms. An alert has been issued in approximately 22 districts, where strong storms and rain are expected. Lightning strikes have already been reported in several areas, leading to reports of damage.
The IMD has advised people to avoid taking shelter near open fields, trees, and water bodies. Furthermore, strong winds pose a risk of uprooting electric poles and trees in many places, potentially disrupting public life.
This change in weather is no less than a relief from the scorching heat in Rajasthan, but it also comes with risks. Many districts are cloudy and light to moderate rain has been recorded. Strong winds are blowing, causing temperatures to drop by 1 to 3 degrees. However, due to the activation of a western disturbance, this weather may persist for the next 2-3 days. In some areas, wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. This situation, especially in desert areas, can turn into dust storms, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of road accidents. This time is also sensitive for farmers, as strong winds and rain can damage crops.
