India’s Fertility Rate Drops Sharply, Elon Musk Warns of a Growing Demographic Challenge (X)
New Delhi: For years the story was about India’s booming population. Now the script is flipping. Fresh data, heated social media chatter, and a viral post on Delhi’s fertility numbers have pulled Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk into the debate. Musk flagged what he calls a worrying dip in India’s birth rate, saying the slide is sharpest among the educated, urban crowd. His remarks land just as official surveys show the country’s total fertility rate slipping below replacement level in several states.
According to population experts, to keep the population of a country stable, an average of 2.1 children per woman is required. This is called replacement level. This rate in India has continuously decreased in the last few years. Data from the National Family Health Survey also indicate that the fertility rate has already fallen below this level in many states of the country.
In recent days, a post on social media became increasingly viral, in which it was claimed that the fertility rate of Delhi has reached below that of many developed countries. Responding to this post, Elon Musk expressed concern. In many big cities including the capital, increasing age of marriage, focus on career and expensive lifestyle are being considered as the main reasons for this change.

Among those most educated, India’s birth rate fell below replacement many years ago. https://t.co/RsWf0PK6wx
With the increasing level of education, there has been a big change in thinking regarding family planning. While earlier families with three or four children were common, now most couples are preferring to be limited to one or two children. The increasing expenditure on children's education, health and future is also leading families towards smaller size.
Experts believe that urbanization has significantly affected the social structure. Joint families have been replaced by small families. The priorities of the youth have also changed due to the desire for job, career and better standard of living. Many people are getting married late, while some couples are also postponing the decision of having children.
Elon Musk has many times expressed concern over the declining birth rate in different countries of the world. They believe that if this trend continues for a long time, the working population may decline in the future. This will increase pressure on the economy and the proportion of elderly population may increase rapidly. Musk has already given similar warnings regarding Japan, South Korea and many countries in Europe.
Currently, India is the most populous country in the world and has a large youth population. But population experts believe that if the birth rate continues to decline, new challenges related to workforce, social security and economic development may emerge in the coming decades. This is why policymakers are now keeping an eye not only on the increase in population but also on its changing structure.
Experts say that there is no need to panic for India right now, but the signs cannot be ignored. In the coming years it will become clear whether the decline in the birth rate is temporary or whether the country has entered a period of major demographic change. At present, Elon Musk's comments have again brought this issue to the center of national debate.
