New Delhi: After the long-running border tension between India and China, the path to dialogue seems to be slowly opening again in relations. In this sequence, both countries held the first bilateral meeting in New Delhi on 16-17 April 2026 on the platform of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). In this meeting, implementation of the decisions of the organization, future direction and increasing mutual coordination were discussed. Both sides agreed to continue dialogue on issues such as security, trade, connectivity and people-to-people contacts.
After the military standoff in eastern Ladakh in 2020, relations between the two countries had become quite tense. By 2024, the situation started becoming somewhat normal and talks started again. In such a situation, this meeting is an indication that both the countries now want to move away from confrontation and move forward through dialogue.
In the meeting, implementation of decisions related to SCO and further strategy were discussed. Also, emphasis was laid on issues like trade, regional connectivity, security cooperation and increasing people-to-people contacts. Both sides agreed that regular talks are necessary.
Cooperation between India and China is not limited to the bilateral level only. Both countries are also working together on forums like BRICS. China has supported India's upcoming BRICS chairmanship, further strengthening the signals of cooperation.
India reiterated its strict stance against terrorism, radicalism and extremism in the meeting. It also made it clear that any connectivity project will have to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the member countries.
There are indications that high level meetings may take place between the two countries in the coming times. If this happens, it will be an important step towards increasing trust in relations.
At present this is definitely being considered a positive sign, but it is too early to call it a permanent improvement. The border dispute has not been completely resolved yet and trust between the two sides is also limited. However, the situation can improve with continuous communication.
