India Takes Action: Arms Purchases from US Banned, Rajnath Singh’s US Visit Postponed
National News: India has taken action in response to the tariff war initiated by US President Donald Trump. The Indian government has temporarily put on hold its plans to acquire American weapons and aircraft. The deal included acquiring P-8I Poseidon aircraft, Striker combat vehicles, and Entry Missile Tanks, valued at approximately ₹31,500 crore. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh was scheduled to visit Washington to finalize the deal, but his trip has now been canceled.
According to sources cited by news agency Reuters, New Delhi has put on hold its plans for new US defense acquisitions following the tariffs imposed by President Trump on Indian exports.
On August 6, President Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods in retaliation for India’s purchase of Russian oil, stating that India was indirectly funding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This tariff hike has pushed the total duty on Indian exports to 50%, marking the highest rate applied to any US trading partner.
President Trump has a history of frequently changing his approach toward tariffs. India has stated it remains actively engaged in discussions with the US government and may proceed with defence purchases once the future direction of tariffs and bilateral relations becomes clearer.
Reuters sought comments from India’s Defence Ministry and the Pentagon regarding this development but has not yet received any response. India has publicly maintained that it is being unfairly targeted. It also pointed out that Washington and its European allies continue to trade with Moscow whenever it suits their interests.
This delay in defense procurement reflects growing tensions in India-US relations amid the ongoing trade disputes. While both countries have historically maintained strong strategic and defense ties, recent economic and geopolitical disagreements are testing their partnership. Experts suggest that India may reassess its procurement strategies and explore diversifying its defense suppliers to reduce dependence on any single country. Meanwhile, diplomatic channels remain open, with both sides expected to continue negotiations to resolve tariff issues and restore mutual trust.
