Silent Struggle: 10,574 Indians in Global Prisons, 43 Fighting Death,UAE Tops the List

National News: A large number of Indian citizens are currently lodged in prisons across different countries. This serious issue came to light when the Indian Parliament was informed about it on Friday. In a written response to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh stated that a total of 10,574 Indian nationals are currently imprisoned in various jails across the world. Out of these, 43 individuals have been sentenced to death.

UAE Has the Highest Number of Indian Prisoners

According to the minister, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has the highest number of Indian prisoners. Currently, 2,773 Indian citizens are imprisoned in the UAE for various offenses. After that, Saudi Arabia holds 2,379 Indian nationals in custody, followed by Nepal with 1,357 Indians behind bars.

Other Countries With Significant Numbers of Indian Prisoners

Several other countries also have a large number of Indian citizens in their prisons. The details are:

• Qatar: 795
• Malaysia: 380
• Kuwait: 342
• United Kingdom: 323
• Bahrain: 261
• Pakistan: 246
• China: 183

Apart from these, Indian nationals are jailed in many other countries too.

Countries With Just One Indian Prisoner

Some countries have only one Indian prisoner each. These countries include Angola, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Egypt, Iraq, Jamaica, Mauritius, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, Sudan, Tajikistan, and Yemen.

43 Indians on Death Row

One of the most concerning facts is that 43 Indian nationals have been sentenced to death in different countries. The highest number of Indians on death row is in the UAE, with 21 individuals facing capital punishment.

• Saudi Arabia: 7
• China: 4
• Indonesia: 3
• Kuwait: 2
• USA, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Yemen: 1 each

What Is the Government Doing?

The Indian government has said that it is actively supporting Indian citizens who are jailed abroad. The embassies are providing legal help, guidance for local court procedures, and assistance with appeal processes whenever required.

This data clearly shows that many Indians face legal and personal struggles in foreign lands. While some are in jail due to serious crimes, others may be victims of misunderstandings or lack of proper legal support. The situation is a reminder that India needs to increase awareness, provide timely legal assistance, and strengthen support systems for Indians living or traveling abroad.
