New Delhi: In Jaipur late on Friday night, a speeding Audi car crushed people and shopkeepers standing on the roadside. One youth died, and 16 people were injured in the accident. The condition of many injured is said to be serious. The incident took place near Kharbas Circle in the Journalist Colony area.
Eyewitnesses say that the car was moving very fast. The driver lost control, and the vehicle collided headfirst with the road divider. After this, she turned straight towards the footpath and started trampling the carts and shops standing there.
The car went on crushing people and shops for about 30 meters. A car parked nearby overturned. More than 10 small shops and carts were broken into pieces. There was screaming on the road. People started running here and there to save their lives.
As soon as information about the accident was received, the police reached the spot. Ambulances were called, and the injured were sent to the hospital. 12 people have been admitted to SMS Hospital and Jaipuria Hospital. Four people were sent home after dressing.
Police suspect that the young man driving the car was under the influence of alcohol. The car has been seized, and an investigation is underway. The medical report is awaited.
According to the administration, there were four people in the car. One person has been arrested. The remaining three fled from the spot. They are being searched.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has instructed the hospitals that the injured should be treated properly and there should be no shortage of any kind. Deputy Chief Minister Premchand Bairava also reached the spot.
People of the area say that cases of speeding and drunk driving are increasing in the city, but no strict action is taken. He says that if the ban had been imposed in time, perhaps this accident would not have happened.
Police are watching the footage of nearby CCTV cameras. The search for the absconding accused is going on. Officials say that the culprits will not be spared.
