Jaipur (Rajasthan): A horrific road accident in the Harmada area of Jaipur on Monday afternoon ruined the lives of many families. A speeding dumper crushed more than 17 vehicles near Loha Mandi, killing 14 people on the spot and seriously injuring 13 others. After the accident, dead bodies were scattered on the road, vehicles were destroyed, and there was screaming. The dumper driver is suspected to be drunk, due to which he ran uncontrolled for 300 meters when the brakes failed.
There was a flood of mourning in the Trauma Center. The crying of Ram Prasad, father of deceased Vinod, is not stopping. “Vinod used to run a grocery shop… had just gone out with a scooter…” His voice became hoarse as he said this. Thinking about the future of his two small grandchildren, his eyes become moist. Suresh Meena's younger brother, Hariram, was in shock in this accident. Suresh of Rajdhirajpura village of Niwai was returning from Sikar after completing his work when he got the news of the accident on the phone. Cousin Harsahay said, “We just came to know… Now the house is deserted.” As soon as the family members arrived, their steps would stagger and their tears would not stop.
Police investigation revealed that the dumper driver was under the influence of alcohol, due to which the vehicle went out of control. The accident occurred at around 1 pm on Sikar Road, when traffic was normal. The dumper first hit a Swift car, then crushed bikes, cars, and a trailer in a chain reaction. Police of the Harmada police station reached the spot and started rescue. The injured were admitted to hospitals in Jaipur, where the condition of many is critical. This is the second consecutive major accident in Rajasthan—15 people died in Phalodi on Sunday.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma described the accident as "extremely tragic and heartbreaking" and gave instructions for the treatment of the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 for the injured. President Draupadi Murmu expressed condolences. Former CM Ashok Gehlot also expressed condolences. District Collector Jitendra Soni said that 12 deaths have been confirmed; the remaining figures may increase.
This incident is not just a game of numbers but a poignant story of broken families, extinguished smiles, and silent homes. This dark chapter, which has come amid the happiness of Diwali, raises questions on the administration—is strictness being taken to stop drunk driving? There is a need to strengthen road safety standards, regular checking, and awareness campaigns so that such pain does not happen again. It is our prayer that the victims get justice and support.
