Around 5:15 am, the fire started in the Asha Tyres factory. The fire in this rubber and chemical-filled plant quickly engulfed the entire building. Eyewitnesses present at the spot said that within minutes, black smoke started rising from the factory's roof which could be seen from several kilometres away.

As efforts were underway to control the fire in the tire factory, a fire was reported from a footwear unit located in the nearby Gadaipur area. This factory was filled with a large quantity of rubber soles, glue and other flammable materials.
The fire first engulfed the warehouse and then started spreading to the main production unit. The second team of the fire brigade responded immediately, cut off the power supply there and extinguished the fire with high pressure jets of water and foam. After about 2 hours of effort, the situation here was brought under control.

The relief in the initial investigation was that no workers were present in both the factories at that time, due to which there was no loss of life. However, the fire has caused an estimated loss of Rs 1 to 1.5 crore.
In the preliminary investigation of the fire department, short circuit has been cited as the possible cause of the fire. However, forensic investigation of both the incidents will be done so that the possibility of any negligence or conspiracy can be ruled out.
After these two major incidents, the Jalandhar district administration has issued a strict warning to the industrial units. All units have been asked to get fire safety audit done and keep the fire fighting equipment in working condition. The inspection campaign will start in the coming week.
