Karnataka is battling a deluge as heavy rains have triggered a flood-like situation across multiple districts, with Dharwad facing severe impacts. On June 12, 2025, authorities declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Dharwad to ensure student safety amid rising water levels and disrupted transport. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, warning of continued heavy rainfall that threatens to exacerbate the crisis.

Torrential Rains Cause Widespread Disruption

Dharwad district has been inundated by relentless downpours, with areas like Hubballi and Hanashi village reporting severe waterlogging. Streams such as Tupparihalla and Bennihalla are overflowing, submerging low-lying areas and farmlands. Yeliwala in Kundgol taluk recorded a staggering 201mm of rain in 24 hours, according to local reports. Roads have turned into rivulets, halting traffic and stranding residents. In rural areas, farmers face crop losses, with standing paddy and maize fields at risk. The IMD’s red alert for Dharwad forecasts extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm today, raising fears of further damage to infrastructure and homes.

School Closures and Safety Measures

Deputy Commissioner announced the closure of educational institutions in Dharwad on June 12, citing hazardous conditions. The decision aims to protect students from flooded roads and potential accidents. Other districts, including Uttara Kannada and Belagavi, are also on high alert, with local administrations monitoring vulnerable areas. Rescue teams and disaster response units are deployed to assist affected communities, while authorities have urged residents to avoid waterlogged zones and stay indoors unless necessary. Relief centers are being set up in severely hit areas to provide shelter and essentials.

IMD Warns of Prolonged Rainfall

The IMD’s latest update predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall across North Interior Karnataka, including Udupi, Uttara Kannada, and Belagavi, for the next three days. The monsoon’s intensity, driven by a low-pressure system, shows no immediate signs of easing. As Karnataka braces for more rain, the focus is on minimizing losses and ensuring public safety amid this unprecedented weather event.
