Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said on Tuesday that DGP K. Ramachandra Rao has been suspended and could be dismissed after an inquiry. The DGP-rank officer is embroiled in a scandal involving an obscene viral video.
Videos recently went viral on social media showing a man in compromising situations with women. It is being claimed that the man in the video is Rao. The video was also aired on news channels on Monday allegedly showing Rao in compromising situations with women. Rao has denied the video, calling it "fake."
The government suspended Rao with immediate effect, pending a detailed inquiry, citing violation of service rules and conduct unbecoming of a government servant. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, the Home Minister said that the suspension was an immediate step given the seriousness of the matter.
Parameshwara said that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident and further action will be taken based on the inquiry report.
"We have suspended him. There will be an inquiry, other aspects will also be looked into after the inquiry, and further action will be taken accordingly," he said.
“We have taken immediate action. What further action is required will be decided after a detailed investigation. He can even be dismissed from service. Since this was a serious issue, we felt suspension was necessary at once,” Parameshwara told the media.
On being asked whether the suspended officer wanted to meet him, Parameshwara said that he deliberately avoided any interaction.
"It is necessary to be cautious in such a situation, so I did not meet him," he said.
Responding to the BJP's demand for the officer's arrest, the minister indicated that the government is not ruling out further stringent action in the future.
"Further action could be different. He could also be dismissed," he said.
He also said that despite the officer's seniority, the government did not hesitate to take action.
"Immediate action was necessary, so it was not considered that he is a senior officer. Further action will be taken based on the inquiry report," Parameshwara said.
When asked about the complainant, the minister said, "I have no information about the complainant. Apart from what has initially come to light, I don't know anything else about this matter."
He added that the incident had caused embarrassment to the department.
"Such incidents are a matter of shame not only for the police department but for other departments as well," he said.
