Kurnool: The investigation into the horrific bus accident in Andhra Pradesh 's Kurnool district has reached a major turning point. Police have found crucial clues in CCTV footage from National Highway 44. Minutes before the accident, a bike was seen filling up at a petrol pump. Employees at the pump reported that the bike was a Pulsar, with a faulty headlight, and the driver was using only the left indicator.

The petrol pump manager stated that the driver, Srinivas Shankar, appeared to be intoxicated and driving recklessly. The CCTV footage clearly showed him attempting stunts while his companion got off to refuel. The pump employee stated that the condition of the bike made it appear as if it could skid at any moment.

Drunk biker sparked Kurnool tragedy

Shockingly, the bike appeared at the petrol pump just 40 minutes before the accident, at 2:22 a.m. Both men paid in cash, so there was no record of the amount of petrol consumed. Police have now detained the young man who was riding the bike with the deceased driver, B. Srinivas Shankar (22), at the time of the accident. It is being reported that this bike was the cause of the devastating fire that consumed the bus.

The driver, Srinivas Shankar, died on the spot, while his pillion rider, Eriswamy, escaped with minor injuries. Police have now arrested him and begun questioning him to determine the true cause of the fire.

How the accident happened

According to police, preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred between 3 and 3:15 a.m. on Friday in Chinnattekur village, on the outskirts of Kurnool. The bus was traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru and was carrying a total of 44 passengers.

Following the collision, the bus caught fire, killing 19 passengers, including two children, while 27 passengers and the two drivers managed to escape by breaking windows. Police believe the bike was trapped under the bus, causing friction and petrol leakage to cause the fire. Investigations at the scene also revealed that the bus dragged the bike for approximately 200 meters, after which the fire engulfed the entire vehicle.
