Madurai: The death of a woman officer at the LIC building in Madurai last month was initially reported to be a fire accident, but police investigation revealed it to be a completely planned murder. After this sensational revelation, the police arrested Assistant Administrative Officer D. Ram late on Monday night. He is accused of killing Senior Branch Manager Kalyani Nambi, who was murdered by pouring petrol, and tried to make the fire look like an accident to destroy the evidence.
Investigation revealed that many insurance agents had complained to Kalyani that D. Ram had kept more than 40 death claim files pending for a long time. When Kalyani questioned this and asked to give information to higher authorities, the accused got nervous. According to the police, it was due to this fear that he planned the murder and wanted to destroy the evidence by burning the files.
Kalyani Nambi was in her cabin on the second floor of LIC Bhawan at around 8.30 pm on 17th December. At the same time suddenly the electricity of the entire building was cut off. As soon as it got dark, she felt movement towards the main door and called for help. According to the police, at this time D. Ram poured petrol on her and set her on fire. The cabin was completely burnt, and Kalyani died on the spot.
After the incident, the accused claimed that a masked person entered inside with the intention of robbery and ran away after setting fire. To make himself look burnt, he tried to set fire to his cabin, in which he suffered minor injuries. Based on this story, initially it was considered an accident of arson.
As the investigation progressed, the statements of the accused kept changing again and again. Police found water bottles filled with petrol from his cabin. Apart from this, a tube used to extract petrol from the bike was also recovered. All these things did not match the story of the accident, and the suspicion deepened.
Kalyani Nambi's son told the police that on the night of the incident, his mother had called him and asked him to inform the police immediately. This call made it clear that she had sensed the danger and this was not a sudden accident.
Police said that the accused first sent mail to the electricity department complaining about the fault in the supply. Then he closed the main door of the building with a chain so that no one could come inside. After this, he committed the crime and tried to prove the fire was an accident.
During interrogation, D. Ram has confessed to his crime. Police arrested him and admitted him to Government Rajaji Hospital. The sections of the case registered earlier have been changed, and now many serious sections have been imposed, including murder, destruction of evidence, not giving information about the crime, and giving false information.
This case is not only the story of the tragic death of a woman officer but also shows how a planned conspiracy tried to disguise it as an accident.
