New Delhi: India used loitering munitions for the first time to destroy terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under its Operation Vermilion. This operation was a joint action of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, launched to avenge the dreadful terrorist attack in Pahalgam. India deployed loitering munitions for this operation. These are high-precision weapons that hover over an area and attack their target once identified. These drones fly just a few feet above ground level, and once they lock onto their targets, they dive and destroy them. Using these, the Indian Army destroyed terrorist strongholds in Pakistan, which had long posed a significant challenge to Indian security forces.
The primary goal of this operation was to identify and destroy terrorist launch pads. Based on coordinates provided by Indian intelligence agencies, the Indian Army carried out precise strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. These locations were associated with major terror groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. The Indian Air Force launched airstrikes on four Jaish-e-Mohammed camps, three Lashkar-e-Taiba centres, and two Hizbul Mujahideen hideouts.
Describing the operation as "measured and neutral", India’s Ministry of Defence stated that the aim was to target terrorists, not Pakistan’s military assets. The ministry clarified that no Pakistani military facility was harmed in these attacks. This step was taken in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
Loitering munitions (also known as suicide drones, kamikaze drones, or explosive drones) are autonomous systems capable of hovering over a target area and striking without a human operator. These drones remain airborne over suspected enemy locations and attack as soon as a target is identified. Their ability to linger and strike with precision makes them highly effective in anti-terror operations.
Through Operation Vermilion, India sent a clear and stern message—it will take every necessary step to eliminate terrorism. Indian forces demonstrated that the country will no longer remain silent but will respond decisively to any terror threat.
