New Delhi: In a significant operation, the Delhi Police Special Cell has successfully dismantled an inter-state arms trafficking syndicate, resulting in the arrest of two alleged gunrunners. The suspects, identified as Sunny Sharma, 30, and Devinder Chhabra, 28, both hailing from Haryana, were apprehended on December 17, 2024, near the Singhu Border in Delhi.
Authorities recovered a total of 10 firearms from the accused, which included three semi-automatic pistols and seven single-shot pistols. These weapons were reportedly supplied to a criminal gang operating within the Delhi/NCR region. The police's swift action has raised concerns regarding the ongoing issue of illegal arms trafficking in the area.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pranav Tayal, both suspects have notable criminal histories. Sunny Sharma has a prior conviction for murder and was out on bail at the time of his arrest. Similarly, Devinder Chhabra also faced murder charges and was released on bail. This information highlights the persistent threat posed by individuals involved in serious criminal activities.
The police have registered a case under the Arms Act, initiating further investigations into the syndicate's operations and potential connections to other criminal entities. The authorities are committed to uncovering the broader network behind this arms trafficking operation.
The arrest of these individuals underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in combating organized crime. With firearms being a critical element in escalating violence among gangs, the police's proactive measures are essential for maintaining safety in urban areas like Delhi.
