Mamata Banerjee Faces Fresh Trouble as Kakoli Dastidar’s Son Sends Legal Notice Over Ticket Claim (X)
Kolkata: The ongoing turmoil in TMC shows no signs of abating. Baidyanath Ghosh Dastidar, son of rebel Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, has sent a notice to former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other TMC leaders over alleged statements claiming that he had sought an MLA ticket from the party to fight state assembly polls from the Barasat assembly constituency.
Legal notices have been sent to Trinamool MPs Sougata Roy, Kalyan Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, and former Trinamool leader Sonali Guha for making false, defamatory, and baseless allegations against him.
In a statement, Baidyanath Ghosh Dastidar clarified that he never sought a MLA ticket from the Barasat assembly constituency. He said claims to the contrary are false and defamatory.
On Sunday morning, Baidyanath accused TMC MP Mahua Moitra of “falsely claiming” that his mother, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, was “crying for an MLA ticket” for him.
"100 per cent lies. disagreements should be fought politically, not by dragging private individuals and family members into the dispute. I reserve my legal rights," he wrote in the post.
Baidyanath said he has decided to sue them and a notice would sent to all five of them on Monday.
The statement further stated that their lawyer, Pooja Shukla, has prepared a legal notice addressed to Mamata Banerjee, Saugata Roy, Kalyan Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, and Sonali Guha, which they had signed.
"I have requested a public apology and retraction of these statements," Baidyanath said in the letter. "Failing an appropriate response, I intend to pursue such legal remedies as may be available to me under law, including proceedings for defamation."
"My client has no desire to participate in or be associated with internal political disputes, controversies, or narratives. He therefore objects to any direct or indirect use of his name, identity, professional background, or family circumstances in connection with political commentary, speculation, or public discourse," the letter stated, asking the TMC leaders to issue a public apology.
Sonali Guha and other Trinamool leaders recently commented that Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar had become a rebel MP because the party did not give her son a ticket to contest the Barasat assembly constituency in the recently concluded assembly elections. They stated that they have requested a public apology and retraction of these statements. If they do not receive a proper response, they will resort to legal remedies available under the law, including defamation proceedings.
This development comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is grappling with its biggest internal crisis in recent years, which began after a crushing defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The party's stability is under severe pressure as a large number of MPs and leaders are openly rebelling against Mamata Banerjee's leadership and the influence of party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
In a post on X, Baidyanath Ghosh alleged that Mahua Moitra falsely claimed that her mother, Kakoli Ghosh, was crying while demanding an MLA ticket for her.
In the legal notice, Baidyanath has demanded a public explanation and apology within 15 days. He stated that he neither sought nor desired any nomination from the Barasat Assembly constituency and that he had no political ambitions in this regard. The notice states, "On the instructions of and on behalf of my client, Baidyanath Ghosh Dastidar, a well-known psychiatrist and medical professional, I am issuing this legal notice."
The notice describes him as a highly qualified psychiatrist who trained and practiced at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, Boston, and the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, London. It also states that he is known for his academic excellence, professional integrity, and public respect. It also alleges that on several occasions, including in media interviews and public statements, insinuations and claims were made that he had sought a political nomination from Barasat, and that his mother had taken a rebellious political stance when he did not receive it.
