Water Everywhere in Mumbai — Torrential Rains Kill 2, Paralyse City Life (Image Source: Agencies)
Mumbai was battered by heavy rains from Friday evening that continued into Saturday, causing flooding and major disruption across the city. In Vikhroli, a landslide triggered by the downpour killed a father and daughter, while the mother and son from the same family were seriously injured. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby districts, warning of more heavy rain on Sunday.
Due to extremely heavy rainfall that began after midnight in the Vikhroli, Powai, Sakinaka, and Marol areas, at around 2:30 a.m. a portion of the hillside in Varsha Nagar’s Jankalyan Society (Vikhroli West) collapsed onto a chawl. Four members of the same family were trapped. In the accident, Suresh Mishra and his daughter Shalu Mishra died on the spot, while his wife Arti Mishra and son Rituraj Mishra were admitted to Ghatkopar’s Rajawadi Hospital in an injured condition.
The effect of the continuous heavy rain throughout the night was seen by Mumbaikars in the morning, when local train services had to be halted for a long time due to waterlogging on tracks in areas like Sion and Chunabhatti on the Central Railway line. Even afterward, trains ran irregularly throughout the day. On the Western Railway line too, services remained slow all day. On the roads as well, in several low-lying areas, waterlogging forced changes to the routes of many BEST buses. In these waterlogged areas, the BMC is attempting water drainage using pumps.
Since it was a Saturday, people also avoided stepping out of their homes. The BMC had also advised residents to go out only if necessary. Flight operations were also affected due to heavy waterlogging near the airport.
