National News: There is a steady decline in extremism and terror-related incidents in the country. According to the latest report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in 2023 such incidents decreased by 63 percent over 2022. This decline is considered to be due to the strictness of security agencies, the policies of the government and better coordination at the ground level.
The report states that a total of 446 cases related to extremism, rebellion and terrorism were reported in 2022, while in 2023 the number came down to 163. The special thing is that the cases of jihadi terrorism fell the most. There were 126 such cases in 2022, which decreased to only 15 in 2023. In the northeastern states, the incidents related to rebellion have come down from 26 to 10. Left-wing extremism, i.e., Naxal violence, was also successfully brought under control. Such incidents declined by more than 44 percent in 2023. The report said that due to the frequent pressure and development works of the security forces, the situation in Naxal-affected areas.
However, there has also been a matter of concern that the number of weapons and bullets received from militants has increased. In 2022, when only 36 weapons and 99 cartridges were recovered, in 2023 the number increased to 706 weapons and about 20 thousand cartridges. It indicates that terrorists and militant groups are constantly collecting weapons despite the incidents being reduced. The report also recorded that a total of 318 militants surrendered in 2023. However, the figure was less than in 2022, when 417 militants laid down arms. From May 2023, there was tension between the Meitei and hilly tribes and many incidents of violence came to light. Manipur stood first in the entire country in cases of atrocities on scheduled tribes. Assam finished second in the case of violent crimes.
The status of Jammu and Kashmir has also been reported in the report. According to statistics, there is a steady decline in crime cases there. In 2021, when 31,675 cases were reported, they came down to 29,595 in 2023. Overall, the NCRB report has brought a sense of relief for the country. The continuous decrease in cases related to extremism and terrorism shows that the strategy of security agencies is going in the right direction. Nevertheless, issues like the rise in arms recovery and the situation in Manipur indicate that the fight is not yet over.
