Bihar: In a heartbreaking incident, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ajit Singh of the Bihar Police reportedly took his own life on November 1 after being denied leave for Chhath Puja. Singh was discovered dead in the barracks of the Traffic Operations Office at Ekta Bhawan, with a gunshot wound to his head.

Following the discovery, Central SP Sweety Sahrawat and a forensic team arrived to initiate an investigation. Singh, a native of Badkagaon village in Bhojpur district, served at the police line in Patna, where he shared quarters with fellow officers. His sudden death has prompted an in-depth inquiry, with police examining all possible factors.

Family’s appeal for festival leave

Ajit Singh’s father, Vinod Singh, revealed that the family had invited him home for Diwali, but he couldn’t secure leave. They had hoped he could visit for Chhath Puja, to which he responded that he could only come if granted time off. Singh had been with the Bihar Police since 2007, starting as a constable and earning a recent promotion just four months prior to this incident.

Forensic and postmortem examinations underway

City SP Sweety Sahrawat stated that a thorough investigation is underway. Forensic experts are analysing evidence from the scene, and Singh’s body has been sent for a postmortem. When questioned about Singh’s mental state, particularly in relation to the alleged leave denial, the City SP emphasised that all elements are being carefully evaluated.

Family and career background

Ajit Singh is survived by three sons, a daughter, and close-knit family members. He belonged to a family with deep public service roots—a brother in the army, another engaged in local business, and a third serving as a loco pilot. Before his recent Patna posting, Singh was stationed in Bhabhua, where he continued his dedicated service to the Bihar Police.

The case sheds light on the pressures faced by law enforcement officers when personal commitments and duty demands intersect, particularly during major cultural and family festivals.
