PM Modi-Trump Meeting: India Requested No Questions, Trump Forgot, Says US Envoy

Washington: US Ambassador Sergio Gore has made a big claim regarding the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in France. According to Gore, India had already requested America that the media should be present during the meeting of the two leaders, but questions from journalists should not be taken in the press conference. Trump had also agreed to this, but later he asked the journalists to ask questions. After this the conversation continued for about 45 minutes.

Prime Minister Modi and Trump met on June 17 during the G7 summit in Evian-le-Bains, France. Gore mentioned the behind-the-scenes developments related to this meeting at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum on Saturday.

What request did India make to America?

According to Sergio Gore, a special request was made from India before the meeting. India wanted the media and cameras to be present during the meeting but not to turn it into a full-fledged press conference and not take questions from journalists.

Gore said that he had conveyed this directly to President Trump. Trump reportedly agreed to this request and said that there was no problem in it.

Then why did Trump ask journalists to ask questions?

According to Gore, after the meeting started, both the leaders made their initial remarks for a few minutes. A large number of cameras and journalists were present in the room. Meanwhile, Trump suddenly turned towards the reporters and asked, "Any questions?"

Gore said that after Trump's question, the whole atmosphere changed and the conversation took the form of a press conference. This conversation with Prime Minister Modi lasted for about 45 minutes, in which many issues were discussed.

The two leaders met at a time when tensions in West Asia were affecting maritime trade and energy supplies. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz, safety of Indian sailors and India-US trade relations were discussed in the meeting.

Prime Minister Modi had also raised the issue of safety of Indian sailors working in conflict-affected areas. He had said that the safety of Indian sailors present in the Strait of Hormuz is very important.

What was discussed on India-US trade agreement?

During the meeting, both the leaders also talked about the proposed trade agreement between India and America. At that time both the countries were negotiating a bilateral trade agreement.

Trump had said during the meeting that India and America are very close to a trade agreement. However, further negotiations and official decisions regarding the agreement are awaited.

There is currently no official response from the Indian government on Sergio Gore's claim in which he said that New Delhi had requested not to hold questions and answers at the press conference.
